From a 1916 Farm Town to a Busy City

Wolfforth was established in 1916 beside the Santa Fe tracks and incorporated in 1950 (Handbook of Texas). Its name honors brothers George C. and Eastin Wolffarth. When the post office and the depot opened in 1923, the two offices spelled the family name differently, and the misspelled version stuck.

The 2020 Census counted 5,521 residents. The Census estimate for July 2025 is 8,746, so far more households now share the city's 3.06 square miles along US 62/82 and FM 179.

A Housing Stock That Is Mostly New

Census survey data put the median Wolfforth home at about 2006, the newest housing of any town we cover around Lubbock. Many families bought into a fresh subdivision, such as The Harvest or Overlook West, rather than an older block.

Recent building dominates. About 44% of homes went up since 2010, by the same survey data, and most are detached houses on concrete slabs.

Those homes carry real value. The Census puts the median owner-occupied home at $260,200. Owners occupy about 78.5% of homes, and the median household earns $106,250. When a slab that young starts to show cracks, owners here tend to want a clear, written explanation.

Services for Homes in Wolfforth, TX

  • Drywall and brick marks. A thin line above a door frame or a step pattern in brick is often the first clue. The foundation crack repair page shows how to measure and log one.
  • Slab edges that drop. Newer slabs can settle at one corner as the soil under the outer beam dries. Read how a specialist sorts that out on slab foundation repair.
  • Support under the low side. Steel or concrete piers carry part of the load below the drier upper soil. The foundation repair overview compares the pier types.
  • Floors that feel off. A marble that rolls across the kitchen is worth a note. House leveling explains how floors are brought back toward flat.
  • Raised floors. If your home sits on piers and beams, the crawl space gets its own check, as the pier and beam foundation repair page describes.

Clay Subsoil Under a Flat Plain

Wolfforth sits on the flat High Plains. The Handbook of Texas describes Lubbock County ground as brown to reddish loams and sandy loams over clay. Beneath that, a few feet down, is caliche: a hard lime layer that marks the Caprock. Rain soaking down can stall on top of it. One side of a lot may then stay damp while the other side dries.

Weather swings test that ground. In 2011, Lubbock logged only 5.86 inches of rain, a record low, plus a record 48 days at 100°F or hotter (NWS). Golf-ball hail fell about a mile west-southwest of town in May 2024 (NWS). That is a roof and siding matter, but after a storm like it, walk the outside of the house anyway.

Wolfforth, TX Permits Start Online

The City of Wolfforth Building Permit Department works out of City Hall at 302 Main St., and it takes applications online only. Permits apply to new houses, additions and remodels. Its codes include the 2021 editions of the residential code and of the International Existing Building Code, the latter written for changes to houses that already stand.

Foundation repair is not named on the City's page, so ask the department whether your repair needs a permit. Some neighborhoods need architectural review before a permit issues, so check your neighborhood's rules as well. Lubbock County itself issues no building permits; Wolfforth runs its own office. Ask the specialist who will pull any permit.

What Wolfforth, TX Repairs Might Cost

The Lubbock row is one cost site's local average, and it sits low next to the national range. The other rows are national. Read them as planning numbers; we don't set prices, and nothing here is a quote.

Why Wolfforth, TX Homes Settle Unevenly

A new slab has not yet lived through many seasons. The first long dry stretch pulls water out of the clay at the edges first, while the soil under the middle stays damper. One corner can then sit a little lower than the rest. When hard rain returns, the dry clay swells fast. The U.S. Drought Monitor map for mid-October 2026 showed close to two-thirds of Lubbock County residents (about 64%) living in drought.

Yards add their own pattern. A sprinkler zone on one side, a young tree planted close to the wall, or a downspout that empties against the slab can each leave one spot wetter than another.

Common Wolfforth, TX Foundation Questions

Can a house built after 2010 already have foundation movement?

Yes, it can. Age matters less than how the soil under the slab gains and loses water. A home that went through a dry summer or two may show hairline cracks in drywall or tile. Many are cosmetic. Pencil a mark at each end with the date, and check again after a few months to see whether the line has grown.

Does Wolfforth require a permit for foundation repair?

The City's permit page lists new construction, additions and remodels, but it does not name foundation repair. So we can't give a firm yes or no. Ask the Building Permit Department at City Hall, 302 Main St., before work starts. Applications there are online only, and the City says it may take up to 15 business days to process one.

Is there a state license I can look up for a foundation company?

There isn't one; Texas stopped regulating home builders through a state commission in 2009, and no foundation license replaced it. So build your own file. Get a certificate of liability insurance, local references, and the warranty in writing, including whether it moves to a buyer if you sell. One more question: will a licensed professional engineer go over the house, or seal the plan, before work begins?

Will my neighborhood's review rules affect the work?

They might. Wolfforth says some neighborhoods need architectural review before a permit issues. Piers sit out of sight, but drainage changes or new grading near the house can still raise questions. Read your neighborhood's rules, and ask the review group early if anything outside will look different.
