A Santa Fe Town on a Planned Grid
The Santa Fe railway bought the townsite on April 15, 1911, and the town opened that June 15 with streets laid out after the plan of Washington, D.C. (Handbook of Texas). It takes its name from rancher and banker O. L. Slaton. For a time it anchored the largest division on the whole Santa Fe system, and the population peaked at 7,250 in 1970.
The rail story is easy to see in the BNSF yard, the downtown square and the Slaton Harvey House, opened in 1912. In 2025 the Texas Historical Commission named the Harvey House its 40th state historic site (KCBD).

The Oldest Houses on Our Map
Slaton has the oldest housing of the five towns we serve beyond Lubbock. Census survey data put the median home at about 1963.
Go back further: about one home in five went up before 1940, during the railroad's early decades, by the same survey data. If your home sits on piers and beams, it may be one of these older houses with a crawl space under the floor.
Owners stay put here. The 2020 Census counted 5,858 people, and the July 2025 estimate is 5,684, on about 5.40 square miles. Roughly 79.2% of households own their home. A typical owned house is valued at $84,600, against a median household income of $56,676 (Census).

Where Soil Scientists Sampled Acuff
Soil scientists took the reference sample for Acuff soil near Slaton, from a spot off US 84 and FM 41 (NRCS). Acuff is a loam over clay loam that formed in wind-laid sediment, with a lime-rich layer roughly 30 to 60 inches down. A reference sample defines the soil type; it does not mean every Slaton lot sits on Acuff.
Across Lubbock County, loams and sandy loams rest on a clay subsoil, with the hard lime layer known as caliche about two to three feet down (Handbook of Texas). Heavier clays nearby, and the clay in playa floors, can crack open when dry. Yellow House Canyon lies a few miles northeast of town.
Storms here come in bursts. On June 24, 2019, hail from baseball to softball size fell in Slaton (NWS). That is a roof and siding event, but a day like that is a sensible time to circle the house.
Building Services on South 9th Street
Slaton's permit desk is the City of Slaton Building Services office at 130 S. 9th St. A home remodel or addition there means plan review, and the City wants two sets of drawings with the application. Plumbers and electricians bring a Master License and proof of insurance and apply at the counter.
The City's list does not name foundation repair. Ask Building Services whether your repair counts as a remodel before work begins, and ask the specialist who will handle any permit. Lubbock County issues no building permits, but Slaton runs its own office with its own steps.
Planning Numbers for Slaton, TX Homes
No cost site prices foundation work in Slaton. The Lubbock figure is one site's local average and runs low beside national ranges. The other two rows are national. Treat all three as rough planning numbers, not our price or a quote.
| Cost row | Figure | Source (year) |
|---|---|---|
| Pier and beam repair | about $2,000 to $15,000 or more | HomeGuide (2026) |
| Crack repair, per crack | about $250 to $800 | This Old House (2026) |
| Lubbock-area foundation repair | average about $3,018; complex jobs about $6,900 or more | This Old House (2024) |
An older house can hide extra items, such as a soft sill plate or a drain line that leaks. The cost calculator gives a rough slab range, and the foundation repair cost guide explains what moves a price.
Why Slaton, TX Homes Settle Unevenly
Time is a big part of it. A house from the 1940s has lived through more than 80 summers. In that span, old cast-iron drain lines can begin to leak, and a leak under a slab feeds water into the soil below one room. Trees planted long ago may now reach roots under the house and draw water from the ground.
Weather adds the swings. Lubbock's record-dry 2011 brought only 5.86 inches of rain, and the region also saw the heavy rain from the remains of Hurricane Tico in October 1983, when playa lakes overfilled (NWS). Clay that dries out can shrink back from a footing, then swell quickly once rain returns. This fall, about 64% of Lubbock County's people were living in drought (U.S. Drought Monitor).
Check Coverage, Then Your Symptoms
The area check shows whether your address is in range. The quiz then asks about cracks, doors, floors and water, and points you to one of three plain results.
Common Slaton, TX Foundation Questions
My house was built before 1940. What should I look at first?
Start with the floors and the crawl space. If your home sits on piers and beams, look for posts that lean, shims that have slipped, and wood that feels soft. Inside, note doors that drag and floors that dip. Many old houses have settled long ago and stay put. Changes over a few months are what a specialist will want to hear about.
Does Slaton require a permit for foundation repair?
Slaton's Building Services page lists remodels and additions for plan review, but it does not mention foundation repair. Ask the office at 130 S. 9th St. whether your job counts as a remodel. If plumbing work is part of the job, keep in mind that the City takes those permits in person from a Master License holder.
What does the Acuff soil sample mean for my house?
Not much on its own. Soil scientists picked a spot near Slaton to describe Acuff soil, the way a dictionary picks an example. Your lot could sit on Acuff or on something else. A specialist looks at your house and yard, not at the soil name, and may suggest a soil report if the plan depends on one.
Should a professional engineer review an older home?
It can be worth it when cracks are wide or floors slope in several rooms. Before you sign, learn whether a licensed professional engineer will inspect the structure or sign off on the plan, and whether the estimate covers that fee. For budgeting, This Old House (2026) puts the national cost of an engineer's written report between about $500 and $1,000. Texas has no state license for foundation repair companies.
